(VIEW preparation for the NI Transfer Test.)
This test is not set by the government and two examination bodies now run the Test. These tests are known by a variety of different names. The AQE tests are often called the "Common Entrance Assessments" while the PPTC tests are often referred to as the "GL Assessments."
These two examination bodies are The Association Of Quality Education (AQE) and The Post Primary Transfer Consortium (PPTC).
The Association Of Quality Education (AQE) set an exam which is also known as the CEA exam and consists of 3 standard format papers which contain composite tests based on English and Mathematics questions. Learning Together offer 3 such practice tests which are written to closely resemble the actual tests themselves.
The GL Assessments take account of the learning programme and attainment targets of the Revised KS2 Curriculum for English and Mathematics. The questions will test the skills, aptitude and knowledge that all pupils will be developing at this Key Stage. There are separate English and maths papers and the questions are in multiple-choice format.
The Northern Ireland Transfer Test is held in the first term of a child's primary year 7 and there is only a very short period between starting year 7 in September and actually doing the tests. The Transfer Tests has content which is based on English and Mathematics as taught in all primary schools. (These tests are similar to the gramar school selection tests - the eleven plus exam - held in England.)
The content to be covered is matched exactly to the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment’s specification for the Revised Curriculum.
Questions will assess the AT2 Reading and AT3 Writing sections of the Programme of Study for English. The level of difficulty of the questions will not exceed that indicated by the level descriptions for Level 5.
Questions set will relate to the Key Stage 2 Programme of Study for mathematics. They will not assume a knowledge or understanding beyond the level descriptions for Level 5.
Questions will address content detailed in the Attainment Targets: Number; Measures; Shape and Space; and Handling Data. The nature of the Common Entrance Assessment is such that aspects of the Programme of Study that involve certain types of activity, such as discussion or practical activities, will not be included.
As Processes in Mathematics pervades the entire mathematics programme, aspects of the strands of Using Mathematics, Communicating Mathematically and Mathematical Reasoning will be included in questions, where appropriate.
The use of a calculator is not be permitted in the tests.
The assessment should therefore be accessible to all pupils studying the Revised KS2 Curriculum in Northern Ireland.
This document contains the full AQE assessment specification.
Currently 34 schools use the PPTC GL Assessment as part of their selection criteria. The PPTC Entrance Assessment consists of 2 standardised assessment papers and are multiple choice in format.
Time: 50 minutes
The assessment includes the following: · Comprehension: literal and inferential interpretation of statements in passages. Vocabulary: meanings of selected words in the context of a passage. · Spelling and Punctuation: proofreading skills in detecting mistakes in printed material. · Study Skills: knowledge of book layout and methods of finding a reference.
Time: 45 minutes
(Learning Together provide 3 maths practice tests in multiple choice format which are in a similar format as the real test. )
The questions are intended to reflect the diversity of the curriculum; however a few questions covering areas which may not feature in any curriculum, such as elementary logic, are also included to assess intuitive understanding. Most questions have been written either to assess the understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, or to assess the use of mathematics as a practical skill in a range of everyday situations. The remainder of the questions require recall of mathematical facts, properties or geometric names.
